About gaming and metaverse
Key takeaways
- Gaming tokens pay for items, land and rewards inside blockchain games and virtual worlds.
- Axie, The Sandbox, Decentraland and Gala all peaked within a month of Facebook renaming itself Meta in October 2021.
- Nearly every coin here meets the structural-collapse test, which can keep it out of the Deep discount zone.
Gaming tokens pay for items, land and rewards inside blockchain games and virtual worlds. Axie Infinity popularised play-to-earn in 2021, when players in the Philippines and elsewhere earned tokens by battling digital creatures, and The Sandbox and Decentraland sold plots of virtual land as tokens. Gala runs a group of games on one token, Beam is a gaming-focused network launched in 2023, and SuperVerse (listed as SuperFarm) started as a tool for launching NFT drops.
The group's peak was unusually tight: Facebook renamed itself Meta on 28 October 2021 and within a month Axie, The Sandbox, Decentraland and Gala had all set their all-time highs, between 6 and 25 November, before the economics caught up. Play-to-earn games pay rewards in tokens that players tend to sell, so they need a steady flow of new money coming in, and when new players slowed in 2022 prices fell hard.
On the latest snapshot
As of 14 Oct, 02:00 BST, the median gaming and metaverse coin on our list is 99% below its all-time high, 6 of the 6 are in a discount zone, and the highest Bargain Score in the group belongs to GALA at 71.
Axie also lost around $600 million in the Ronin bridge hack in March 2022. By October 2026 most of this group was 98% or more below its high, with Gala at 99.7% and Axie and The Sandbox at 99.2% on the 10th.
Games are hard to make well and most fail, token rewards create constant selling, and on many of these projects new tokens keep being released regardless of how many people are playing.

Nearly every coin here meets the structural-collapse test in our risk level: more than 95% below its high with a market value under $1 billion.
Nearly every coin here meets the structural-collapse test in our risk level: more than 95% below its high with a market value under $1 billion. That knocks a point off the risk calculation and can keep a coin out of the Deep discount zone even when its Bargain Score is high.
The check was added to the original code because The Sandbox was coming out as low risk on the other measures despite a valuation that had collapsed, and on 10 October 2026 its market value was about $200 million, with the price 99% below its peak.
FAQ
Questions about gaming and metaverse
Why did gaming tokens fall further than the rest of the market?
The 2021 prices depended on growth that could not last. In a play-to-earn game, the tokens paid to players have to be bought by somebody, usually new players joining the game. When the number of new players stopped rising in 2022, the rewards were sold into a market with fewer buyers, which pushed prices down, which made the rewards worth less, which drove more players away. That loop, together with the end of the wider bull market and the Ronin bridge hack, explains most of the fall.
The metaverse tokens had a slightly different problem, in that their land prices were set during a burst of excitement after Facebook's rename, and the expected wave of users and brands spending time in virtual worlds did not arrive at anything like the scale those prices assumed.
Can a gaming token recover from 99% below its high?
To get back to its high from 99% down, a token has to rise a hundredfold, which is far more than recovering from a typical bear market. It has happened to some coins in earlier cycles, usually when the project found a new use, but most tokens that fall that far never return to their previous peak. Our cycle targets shrink each coin's previous cycle multiple by a decay factor, on the view that rebounds have tended to get smaller with each cycle, and the methodology page shows the calculation.
Why is a 2023 network like Beam grouped with 2021 games?
Because it trades on the same things as they do. Beam was built as a gaming network, and its price reacts to game launches, player numbers and appetite for gaming as a crypto theme, just as the 2021 games do. Its high came in March 2024 rather than November 2021, so it shows the theme trying to revive in a later cycle, and on 10 October 2026, at 94% below that high, how hard that has been so far.
