Key takeaways
The main screener tells you where each coin sits, and this page is about movement: which coins have changed zone since 14 Oct, 00:55 BST, which way they went and which reading moved them. So far today 6 coins have moved, 0 towards the discount zones and 6 towards Fair value or Expensive. Scores compare each coin with its own past cycles. Educational, not advice.
We added the comparison after looking at how the old version of this page behaved. It showed only the current zone, so a coin that had sat in the Discount zone for three weeks looked exactly like one that had arrived an hour earlier after a 12% fall, and its top pick was not even the same coin as the top pick on the home page, because the two pages ranked on different numbers. The morning of 10 October 2026 is a good example of why the before-and-after matters.
Example: the morning of 10 October 2026
The Fear & Greed Index went from 59 to 64 overnight, and although nothing about any individual coin had to change, 64 is above 60, which is one of the Expensive conditions, so any coin that already had one other sell-side condition could move zone on that alone. The changes list at the top of this page shows the zone each coin left, the zone it moved to and the readings either side, so you can see that kind of change happening instead of wondering about it.
How the scores work
Every formula and data source behind the Bargain Score and the zones, checked against the code.
Read the methodologyThe panel at the top ranks coins by Bargain Score and by nothing else, using the same number you see in the table, so the order always agrees with the figures beside it. Right now the highest is GALA at 71, in the Discount zone.
That sounds too obvious to mention, but the old site did not do it. Its top picks were ranked on a hidden strength value, and its "All Ranked" list was not really sorted at all: when we checked on 10 October 2026, Ravencoin had the highest score on it, 60, and sat 35th of 36.
A high rank is still only a high score, and the zone next to it is where you find out whether the wider conditions agree. In a greedy market they often do not, because the sentiment conditions for the discount zones are hard to meet when Fear & Greed is in the 60s.
Three inputs do most of the moving, and each runs on its own clock. Price is refreshed every five minutes, and with it the distance below the all-time high and the progress towards the cycle targets. RSI is worked out from daily closes, so it only changes once the day's candle closes at midnight UTC, and the Fear & Greed Index is published once a day at the same time. Because that index feeds every coin at once, it can carry a dozen of them across a threshold together.
So the busiest part of the list is usually just after midnight UTC. Today the index moved from 57 to 62, and the moves worth watching for are the ones across 25, 40, 45, 55 or 60, since those are the thresholds the zone rules use.
During the rest of the day a change is more often about one coin. A sharp fall pushes it further below its high and, if its RSI was already low, can add enough buy-side conditions to lift it a zone, while a sharp rise towards its low cycle target can do the reverse and take it down to the lower end of Fair value.
FAQ
Almost always because the Fear & Greed Index crossed one of the thresholds the zones use. alternative.me publishes it once a day at midnight UTC as a single number for the whole market, and it appears in the rules for all five zones.
If it drops from 42 to 38, every coin that already had two other buy-side conditions now has a third, and a group of them can move from Mild discount to Discount in the same refresh even though none of their prices did anything unusual.
We thought about damping this, for example by averaging the index over a few days, and decided against it. The model is meant to be contrarian, so if the whole market's mood changes overnight we think it should react, and the clustering is an honest result of that. The changes list shows the index value before and after each move, which makes it easy to tell when that is the cause.
From the first snapshot after 00:00 UTC, which is 01:00 in the UK during British Summer Time. We chose that point because the new Fear & Greed value and the new daily candle both arrive then, so a change listed here reflects a full set of fresh inputs rather than half of one. It does mean a coin that changed zone at 23:00 UK time counts as one of yesterday's changes, and the list starts again from a clean slate an hour later.
The score and the zone are asking slightly different questions. The score is about how discounted and how sound a coin looks. The zone asks whether the market around it lines up as well, and it checks things the score does not include directly, such as how near the price is to its cycle targets, whether the RSI is oversold right now and what the coin's risk level is.
A worked example shows how far apart they can get. Take a coin scoring 72 that is 65% below its high, with Fear & Greed at 60 and an RSI of 45: it meets only two buy-side conditions, the score above 55 and the drawdown above 50%, so it lands in the Mild discount zone.
Another coin scoring 66, with an RSI of 28 and a drawdown above 70%, meets three and lands in the Discount zone, despite the lower score. We show both side by side because each is telling you something the other leaves out.
It means the price and the market have reached the kind of combination that, in earlier cycles, came near the top. The price is close to or above its low cycle target or within 5% of its all-time high, while sentiment is greedy or the RSI is running hot. The strongest version also needs the price at 90% of its base cycle target with Fear & Greed at 75 or more and RSI at 70 or more.
We named it a zone because it describes conditions, and what anyone does with a position is their own decision. Cycle targets are estimates built from a coin's past range, explained on the methodology page, so a coin can go straight through them or stall well short.
Yes, through the My Plan page. You pick the coins and conditions you care about, and it sends a browser notification, a Discord message or a Telegram message when one of them changes. It runs in your own browser and is not indexed, and the alerts come from the rules you set rather than from anything we choose. If you would rather not set anything up, this page has the same information without the notifications.
The lower end of Fair value (zone scores 20–29) needs two of four conditions, and two of those have nothing to do with the coin's own price: Fear & Greed at 55 or above, and a Bargain Score of 30 or below. If the index climbs from 52 to 57 overnight and the coin's daily RSI reaches 60, that makes two, and as long as its sell-side strength is above 0.40 the coin drops to the lower end of Fair value without any big move in price.
In practice it tends to happen to coins that have already recovered a good part of their fall, because their sell-side strength starts out higher. A coin still 90% below its high rarely gets there, since being that far from its targets keeps the sell-side strength low.
