About settlement rails
Key takeaways
- These networks were built to move money, and most have been pitched to banks and payment firms rather than traders.
- Regulation and headlines have driven their prices more than usage, and XRP is the clearest example.
- Partnership news rarely needs the token: a bank can use a network's software without holding its coin.
These networks were built to move money, and most of them have spent years selling that idea to banks, payment firms and central banks rather than to crypto traders. Ripple pitches XRP for cross-border payments, Stellar is used to issue stablecoins and move remittances, Algorand has been used for central bank digital currency trials, and Hedera is run by a council of large companies. Litecoin is here for a different reason, having been created in 2011 as a faster, cheaper version of Bitcoin for everyday payments.
The group is older than most of our list, and its price history has been driven more by regulation and headlines than by usage. XRP is the clearest example: the US Securities and Exchange Commission sued Ripple in December 2020, a federal judge ruled in July 2023 that Ripple's programmatic sales of XRP on exchanges were not securities offerings, and XRP finally set a new all-time high in July 2025, beating its January 2018 peak.
On the latest snapshot
On the latest snapshot (14 Oct, 02:00 BST), Algorand has the highest Bargain Score among the settlement coins at 62, the typical coin in the group is 85% below its high, and 5 of 5 sit in a discount zone.
Stellar's high also dates from January 2018 and on 10 October 2026 it was still 77% below it. Algorand's comes from the week it launched in June 2019, when thin early trading pushed the price far above anything it has reached since.
The risk we keep coming back to is that partnership news rarely needs the token. A bank can use a payment network's software without holding its coin, a central bank pilot can end without going live, and stablecoins issued on faster general-purpose chains compete for the same payments.

Read the methodology How the screener reads these coins
Launch-week highs distort the distress score, and Algorand looked 96.7% down on 10 October 2026 because its reference point is a price set in its first days of trading, and the model has no way of knowing that high was an outlier. We have left the figure alone, since adjusting highs by hand would be a judgement we would then have to make for every coin, but it is worth keeping in mind when reading Algorand's score.
FAQ
Questions about settlement rails
Why did XRP behave so differently from the rest of this group?
Mainly because of its court case. For two and a half years after December 2020, several US exchanges suspended XRP trading and the price was held back by legal uncertainty that the other coins in this group did not face.
When that eased, first with the July 2023 ruling and then with the end of the case, XRP had a reason to re-rate that was specific to it, and in July 2025 it passed its 2018 high while Stellar and Algorand stayed far below theirs. Even so, by 10 October 2026 it was 61% below that new high, which is a reminder of how far even the strongest coin in a group can fall back within a few months.
Does a bank partnership make a settlement coin more valuable?
Not necessarily. Many partnerships involve a bank using a company's messaging or settlement software, which does not require the bank to buy or hold the network's coin, and some announcements are pilots that never move into production. The ones that matter for the coin are those where the coin itself is used to settle payments in volume, and in our reading those are much rarer than the headlines suggest. The model does not score partnerships at all, as it only sees price, supply, sentiment and trading data.
How does Litecoin's halving work?
Like Bitcoin's. Every 840,000 blocks the reward paid to Litecoin miners halves, which happens roughly every four years; the last one was in August 2023, when the block reward fell from 12.5 to 6.25 LTC, and the next is expected around 2027. Litecoin's past halvings have not lined up with its price cycles as neatly as Bitcoin's, and its highest price, in May 2021, came well after its 2019 halving rather than soon after it.
