Over the past year

Over the past year Nasdaq-100 ETF has returned the most of these 6 (+23.6%) and Ethereum the least (-40.9%). We keep gold and long-dated Treasuries in the table because they don't always move with shares, and lining all of them up over the same five periods shows that far more clearly than flicking between charts.

Market breadth
14 of the 27 US shares on our list rose at the last close and 13 fell. We show that count beside the index because an index weighted by company size can rise on the back of a handful of giants, and on a day like that most of our list would be red.
RSI
A 0 to 100 gauge of recent gains against losses; we call 70 or more overbought and 30 or less oversold.
200-day average
Roughly ten months of closing prices averaged together. 20 of the 27 US shares we track are trading above theirs.
Crypto Fear & Greed 57 (Greed)
alternative.me publishes this crypto-only mood reading once a day, and on 13 Oct 2026 it stood at 57, which it labels Greed, against 73 a week earlier. Over the 30 days shown in the bars above it has ranged from 50 to 78.

How the trend score works

Anything on 65 or more is labelled Uptrend, anything on 35 or less Downtrend, and everything between Sideways.

Worked example: AMD, score 93

Each part's score, its weight and the reason behind it

AMD has the highest score among the shares we follow at the moment, 93, so we use it as the worked example. Each part is scored out of 100 and weighted, and the scaling on momentum is there so that Bitcoin, which can swing 10% in a quiet month, doesn't beat steadier shares every time.

FAQ

Stock market questions, answered with today's data

Each answer is rebuilt from the live figures on this page every time it refreshes.

Is the stock market up or down today?

The S&P 500 is down 0.00% at the last close, as of 20:55 BST on 13 Oct 2026, and 14 of the 27 US shares we track closed higher. The US market is closed at the moment, so these are the last closing prices; crypto keeps trading overnight and at weekends, which is why those prices still change. Among the shares we follow, the biggest riser at the last close is Intel at +1.15%.

What time does the US stock market open in the UK?

For most of the year the US session runs from 2:30pm to 9pm UK time, which is 9:30am to 4pm in New York, Monday to Friday. The clocks complicate this twice a year, because the US and the UK switch to and from summer time on different dates in March and again in October or November, and for those odd weeks the session runs from 1:30pm to 8pm here instead. US exchanges also shut on American holidays such as Thanksgiving and Independence Day, and on those days this page simply carries the last closing prices.

How many stocks are in an uptrend right now?

Using the 200-day moving average as the test, 20 of the 27 US shares we track are above it, and 16 have an Uptrend label on our trend score while 2 are labelled Downtrend. We like this as a quick read on the market because an index can be pulled higher by a few giant companies even when most shares are drifting, and a count of how many are above their own long-term average makes that easy to spot. It is a small sample of large companies, though, so we wouldn't treat it as a measure of the whole US market.

What does the trend score on this page mean?

Right now 27 of the 47 assets we score are labelled Uptrend, 15 Sideways and 5 Downtrend, and AMD has the highest score at 93. The number runs from 0 to 100 and comes from fixed rules applied to each asset's own price history: 35% for where the price sits against its 50-day and 200-day averages, 35% for the last month's return scaled by how volatile the asset normally is, 15% for RSI and 15% for the distance below the 52-week high. We put the Uptrend line at 65 and the Downtrend line at 35. A high score means the trend has been strong, and that is as true just before a run fades as it is in the middle of one, so we would never read it as a forecast.

Where do these prices come from, and how often do they update?

US share and fund prices come from Nasdaq, last collected at 23:55 BST on 13 Oct 2026, and they can lag the market by up to 15 minutes while it is open. Crypto prices come from CoinGecko (last collected at 00:00 BST), the Fear & Greed reading from alternative.me, and the inflation and interest rate figures from the BLS, Federal Reserve, US Treasury, ONS, Bank of England and ECB, which we last checked at 19:15 BST. Our refresh job runs every five minutes, although the official figures only change when each agency publishes, which for CPI is once a month. If one of those sources stops answering we leave its last good number on the page with the time it was collected, so you may occasionally see one section a little older than the rest.
